Let's face it - you can't go on forever drinking shakes and having meal replacement bars! Besides, count up how much it is COSTING you!!

You have been great all day- following a sensible good nutrition plan and it’s 3.30pm. Suddenly you are hungry.

Have you ever been in the situation where you just open the pantry door and go ‘hunting’ for food - ANY food will do.

STOP! Did you know that we have a ‘hunger hormone’ (called ghrelin) that drives us in the afternoon to eat something – anything? This is especially true if you skipped breakfast!

STOP! Did you know that we have a ‘hunger hormone’ (called ghrelin) that drives us in the afternoon to eat something – anything? This is especially true if you skipped breakfast!

BUT this greedy little hormone will be quite satisfied if you feed it NUTS!

Now I am not saying that you just go all out on nuts (after all they do contain fats – but good fats). Plan to have a nut snack between 3 and 3.30pm: 20grams will probably be enough. That’s about 20 almonds, hazelnuts, or walnuts or a mix of the three (as long as it is no more than 20 in total).

If you want to go for brazil nuts, then it’s about 8. Use tree nuts only – NOT peanuts.

Give it a try as part of a good nutrition day and see what happens.

Most cardio equipment at the gym has a program for 'fat burning' or 'cardio'. Have you ever tried it? The 'Fat-burning' zone is NOT the best way to burn fat! How come?

The theory is that when your heart-rate is in 'the zone' the body burns fat as its fuel. True to a point. But you'd have to work 'in the zone' for so long it isn't funny ! Nor is it efficient at really burning fat. You are better to go as hard out as you can and burn more calories per workout. As a result the amount of actual fat burned is greater.

Most cardio equipment at the gym has a program for ‘fat burning’ or ‘cardio’. Have you ever tried it? The ‘Fat-burning’ zone is NOT the best way to burn fat! How come?

The theory is that when your heart-rate is in ‘the zone’ the body burns fat as its fuel. True to a point. But you’d have to work ‘in the zone’ for so long it isn’t funny ! Nor is it efficient at really burning fat. You are better to go as hard out as you can and burn more calories per workout. As a result the amount of actual fat burned is greater.

Imagine this: You walk for 30 minutes ‘in the zone’ and burn 150 calories- of which 50% is fat because you are ‘in the zone’. That’s 75 calories worth of fat, right? Sounds ok. But what if you were to run for 30 minutes and burn 300 calories – of which 33% is fat? That would be 100 calories worth of fat. It doesn’t take much to figure out that the higher your intensity, the greater your fat burning ability is.

So next time you are at the gym, go hard and don’t even look at ‘fat burning-zone’ on that equipment!
